Each district is explored with meticulous detail, revealing hidden courtyards, local haunts favored by Parisians, and the best places to indulge in a quintessential Parisian experience – a leisurely café lunch, a picnic by the Seine, or a stroll through a vibrant market.

What sets Pocket Paris apart from other guidebooks is its engaging narrative and genuine passion for the city. Steves’ voice is warm, inviting, and infused with a deep respect for Parisian culture. He encourages you to slow down, to get lost in the labyrinthine alleyways of Montmartre, to strike up conversations with locals, and to discover the city at your own pace.

Title: Absolute Necessity! A smart phone won’t cut it!
Review: Mr. Rick Steves I really hope you read this review! But I bought 3 of your books and it made our 1 year anniversary trip the absolute best!!! I loved the restaurants and tips you gave! Buy the book just for your own personal concierge and you’ll get an amazing ROI. We didn’t even know the Louvre would be free on the first Sunday of the month until we read it and that of itself made the books essentially free! Even with google maps-you can’t quite figure out what is closest to you or make a “route” of action so the map on the book was amazing to have. This was my second time to several of these cities, but I hadn’t been in 10 years and everything was different. I loved it so much!!!So, to the important information. The books are small and make sure to buy the current version so the recommendations are relevant. The book is organized well with some opening tips in the introduction. It will rank best things to see and I agree with the rankings. Maybe read this before you get to the city. Then it goes into a tour of the city or other tours of museums and such. I downloaded the audio book app, but my husband and I enjoyed just skimming it and we’re trying to be less attached to our phone. The tour section gave Great info and background on what you’re seeing. My favorite is that he gives the history of the city!!! Very great refresher if you’re trying to remember which HBO/showtime series were when and where in the cities (like the Tudors)! Jk but still helpful. We paid for a few tours so we didn’t have to mess with paying for transportation and making our own itinerary because we had limited time (and the means). But reading Rick Steves’ tours have us a base to better enjoy our paid tours. Then it touches on some sights. Same great info. Next is sleeping, I wish I had bought the boom before we planned hotels-we thought we did good research but we obviously didn’t on a few occasions. Then it goes to eating. FANTASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS with useful information to pick what you want. They are listed by what area of town you are in which is very helpful. *Rick- I would like you to rank local cuisine foods with your triangle system as well. And I think you need to include “nightlife/bars/pubs/happy hours” which he kind of does but it is not a separate section/color by area. And a list of popular local drinks, breweries, etc. I know that won’t appeal to everyone, but I would have liked some expert advice on those things. Last are practicalities which was an excellent resource. Helps with transport and just general things you should know. And it has some common phrases in each language-definite life saver! And then you get and EXCELLENT fold out map.Book is small and light weight (maybe the size of an 8×5 photo). Easy to fit in a back pack pocket (it even fit in my coat pocket). Good size font and easy to use as a resource. You’d be crazy not to buy this for your trip because it will pay off.Rick-if you’re ever up for a vacation together I bet you would be a blast!!!

Title: Practical information
Review: Rick Steves is one of the most popular series of guides to travel. We were in Paris for 4 days this summer, and used the book as a quick reference guide. The organization of the book is much like the other guides. It is about 4.5 by 6 inches, 235 pages or so. The first pages of introduction gives a synopsis of Paris’s neighborhoods: Monmartre, Champs Elysees, Eiffel Tower, Major, Historic Core, Left Bank, and Marais. The Daily Reminder gives a succinct overview of special hours for attractions on different days of the week. On first Sundays, for instance, major museums are free (good to know, as we assiduously avoided the crowds) and the fountains run at Versailles in the summer (April to October). The guide gives a list of sites that are closed on certain days of the week. Puppet shows at the Luxembourg Gardens take place on Fridays and Saturdays. Some sights are open late on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (Notre Dame towers, Bateaux Mouche). The guide gives information on hours for the Metro. The back of the book includes a detailed map of Paris, and a map of the Metro. These were invaluable to us, and much more informative the the tourist maps you get at the hotels, which are festooned with ads. They were sturdy too. Despite our flipping back and forth, taking the book in and out of backpacks, the map only ripped in one corner (the one attached to the book). The remainder of the book contains several walking tours of major sites: Historic Paris (Notre Dame area), Louvre, Orsay Museum, Eiffel Tower, Rue CLer, Versailles. It gives detailed information on how to take the train to these areas and which stops to get off. Telephone numbers are given. We had kids ranging in age from 8 to 15 with us, and in general they did not want to see every sight on the tours, which still gave us plenty to see and do. In the back is a map of France. The Metro stops are marked on the main city map.Note: this is a brief and populist guide. It is good for an overview, but not for any kind of detailed historical or academic treatise of the major sights. For this kind of information, I recommend doing research before your trip on the internet, as each major sight has a website. As well, the Blue Guides will bring more life to the tours. We learn interesting little tidbits of information: for example, that St. Denis holding his head is a signature statue above the left door of Notre Dame Cathedral (he was executed by decapitation but in true saintly fashion did not immediately die, but picked up his head and walked for some distance). If you want a more detailed book, you’re going to have to buy (and carry) a heavier book.We did not use this book for restaurant recommendations or hotels. We used a Tripadvisor city app: take the recommendations with a grain of salt, as they are not always unbiased. So, why a guide book and not a smartphone app? Smart phone apps (maps, Tripadvisor, etc.) have an advantage in that your GPS location is available, and the distance to various sights can be accurately estimated. However, smartphones are difficult to see in the sun, and the information you want is not always easily searchable. It would be cool, for example, to wear Google Glass and have it link to Wikipedia. Great, but it’s way cheaper to buy a $10 book.

Title: Concise and Helpful
Review: I used this book on a recent 5-day trip to Paris. This book helped me focus on the highlights without getting overwhelmed by too many options. The restaurant recommendations were AWESOME. I have used Rick Steves’ books when touring other countries and these restaurants were far and away the best. Perhaps that is just because Paris has great food, or perhaps that is due to Rick Steve’s choices. Either way, we were very pleased. My only complaint is that the restaurant recommendations seemed to be mostly in two neighborhoods. We would have liked more options in other areas.

Title: Informative
Review: This is by far the best travel guide I have used to research upcoming trip to Paris France and countryside. It is laid out well, love the 7 day itinerary (used that as my guide to create my 12 day plan). Very informative, love the websites, info on museums covered by the museum pass, restaurant recommendations and $$ expectations. Well written, easy to follow informational guide. Highly recommend! (The other one I used was a gift from my sister who has traveled extensively in France and it is not nearly as user friendly as Rick Steve’s guide.)
