The success of the Nintendo Switch is no longer to be proven and many people like to compare, and rightly so, the current situation in the days of the Wii, Nintendo’s true golden age in terms of console sales. When we think of the 100 million-copy home console, we come to mention Wii Fit, Nintendo’s initiative to mix sports and video games in a more compelling way than the Wii Sport saga. A real hit in homes and especially with active women, Wii Fit was quickly followed by Wii Fit Plus with some additional additions. Years later, Nintendo puts the cover back and offers us an even more advanced formula by releasing Ring Fit Adventure on Nintendo Switch.

In these periods of confinement, all means to do a little sport at home are welcome. Ring Fit Adventure is one of those “games”, which allow you to exercise while staying at home, just like Fitness Boxing (#StayHome). Usually I try to complete a game before offering a test, but this one is special, and has a particularly long story mode. So I wanted to share my thoughts on this game with you right now. Especially since it received an update a short time ago.

Ring Fit Adventure, what is it?

Different from other classic games, Ring Fit Adventure is first and foremost made up of accessories that are a little barbaric, but indispensable. First of all, a Ring-Con, a fairly rigid circle that can be squeezed more or less easily, and which will receive the right Joy-Con. It will be used for arm pressures and various other movements thanks to the gyroscope and the infrared sensor. The same sensor that will measure our pulse after exercise by the way.

Then a strap for the left thigh, associated with the left Joy-Con. It will allow you to capture the movements of the legs while walking, running, bending down …

The game aims to engage us in sport in an original way, and indoors. From simple running to more elaborate exercises, it offers a wide range of movements. Arms and legs, but also waist, stomach, and back. Not to mention yoga exercises to work flexibility and certain muscles more deeply.

From launch, the game offers you several modes, with an adventure mode, a quick game, or an à la carte program. So many possibilities to help us move!

RFA – set of games and accessories

The game aims to engage us in sport in an original way, and indoors. From simple running to more elaborate exercises, it offers a wide range of movements. Arms and legs, but also waist, stomach, and back. Not to mention yoga exercises to work flexibility and certain muscles more deeply.

From the launch, the game offers several modes, with an adventure mode, a quick game, or an à la carte program. So many possibilities to help us move!

The ring on the arm

You can imagine, a game that intends to make you sweat will not work in the traditional way, with the controller in hand and the buttocks propped up on your sofa. Disregarding any convention, Ring Fit Adventure offers you to use the Ring Con, a ring about 25 cm in diameter in which you will slide the right Joy-Con of the Nintendo Switch. Casually, this strange controller replacement offers surprising strength despite its very simple appearance that might make you hesitate to compress it as much as you want: rest assured, the Ring Con is proof against the toughest of you! Add the strap provided in which you’ll place the other Joy-Con and hook it to your left thigh and you’re all set to work out in joy and good humor! Note, however, that the use of the detached Joy-Con makes it incompatible with the Lite model.

Because yes, Ring Fit Adventure intends to go beyond the sterility of a banal gym to put your muscles to work. Through the Adventure mode, the title incorporates a very appreciable playfulness which appropriately introduces gameplay entirely centered on physical activity. A semblance of a scenario accompanies your quest for summer body: a simple pretext to start this single player campaign, the story does not break a duck’s three legs but has the merit of bringing a little warmth and joy. You then find yourself roaming a very colorful and beautifully realized world in pursuit of an evil, bodybuilder dragon who uses forbidden powers to make his muscles swell more and more and spread misfortune around him. As I told you, we’ll come back to the Game Award for best screenplay, but it doesn’t mean that it’s always more motivating to add a goal other than the simple pleasure of hurting yourself!

To explore the world of Ring Fit Adventure, no secret: you will have to run on your own! Thanks to the left Joy-Con attached to your leg, the game detects the speed of your movements and determines how quickly your avatar moves. This is the only parameter you will have to worry about, the route being determined by the game, a bit like in a rail shooter. In addition to the simple running, you will also have to do a few knee climbs here and there to climb the stairs and cross the swamps without too much difficulty. The Ring-Con is obviously stressed and allows you to fire projectiles and jump while compressing it or to vacuum up parts and objects scattered and pulling on the handles. You will understand, just moving around in the world of Ring Fit Adventure will require a lot of effort on your part and as much to say that when one after the other compression, running, squats, yoga and whatnot, it is quick to accelerate its heartbeat !

Ring Fit Adventure Fighters

If the Ring-Con is used to move, it finds its real function during the fights which will punctuate your peregrinations and there too you will have to put your muscles to work! To inflict damage on reckless opponents who stand in your way, Ring Fit Adventure offers a wide variety of exercises targeting different parts of the body. A bit like spells in a J-RPG, the exercises are classified into several categories according to the muscles they will mainly work: the red exercises are mainly turned towards the arms, the yellow ones focus on the abdomen, the bruises on the legs while the green ones consist of various yoga poses. Each exercise is done in a unique way and the very diverse set makes it possible to target all areas of the body without any problem. Some of them do without Ring-Con and others even go without looking at the screen. It is simply impressive to see how much Nintendo could imagine possible movement from this simple plastic ring!

Each “attack” will require a certain number of repetitions to cause damage to your enemies: however, don’t think that selecting the most “powerful” exercises will suffice to emerge victorious from a fight! Getting the movement shown correctly will be essential to launching a strong enough attack and the Joy-Con’s sensors will be there to ensure that you hold the pose long enough to account for the repetition. Surprisingly, the movement detection is rather precise and allows you to truly transcribe the efforts you will provide during your adventures, both for the race and the exercises in the middle of a confrontation. Rest assured, however: Nintendo has provided specific parameters so that the difficulty is in perfect harmony with your profile. In short, the higher the intensity (ranging from 1 to 30), the stronger the resistance the Ring-Con will offer and the longer you will need to hold the poses. The number of repetitions for each exercise is also proportional to the difficulty you will have imposed on yourself. Plus, it’s easy to perform the movements correctly since each is illustrated as you do it: ideal for maximizing the effects of each exercise! You can count on the encouragement and advice of Ring, your traveling companion living at Ring-Con, to get the most out of your session.

Ring Fit Adventure

Concerned with embedding the physical activity of the game as much as possible with a playful dimension, Ring Fit Adventure has several RPGs aspects in its game system. Don’t expect a complex system like that of The Witcher 3, but it is to note that the whole is very effective. Each fight earns you experience points that will level you up and increase your attack and defense stats. You can also improve them by purchasing equipment, consisting of a wide selection of leggings, tank tops and other joggers. Because it is important to stay hydrated, the game also offers you the opportunity to concoct various smoothies from ingredients that you have collected: the different drinks will have various effects such as healing or increasing the power of your attacks. Battles, on the other hand, have a system of strengths and weaknesses that direct you to which exercise to choose to do the most damage depending on the color of the enemy facing you.

For all tastes

In addition to the very complete main game mode alone, Ring Fit Adventure also offers a few additional modes. À la Carte allows you to create your own fitness programs, leaving the possibility of mixing classic exercises and jogging with ingenious and very entertaining mini-games which also, as you can imagine, will involve some physical effort on your part. There is also a musical challenge as pleasant as it is trying that asks you to compress and stretch the Ring-Con to the rhythm of the various music of the game but also other blockbusters of the Switch including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2. Another mode offers many small sets specifically targeting a particular muscle group with the possibility of performing them in two difficulty modes.

Ring Fit Adventure
In short, Ring Fit Adventure is a complete set that effectively combines sport and video games. Far from the extreme sobriety of a Wii Fit, it manages to give real motivation by adding such playful components such as fighting and exploring its colorful world in Adventure mode. Thanks to all these features that Nintendo has the secret, the chemistry is more than successful and a perfect balance is maintained between the physical effort provided on the one hand and the purely video game aspect on the other. Indeed, Ring Fit Adventure may be a video game and packed with music, scoring, bosses and experience points, it is above all geared towards sporting activity. His requirement in performing exercises and maintaining poses pushes to give it all: it is of course possible to cheat, but what interest honestly?

The tour de force here is the contribution of something stronger than the simple well-being that one feels after a workout: in addition to the satisfaction of having expended, the player is rewarded by obtaining regularly new techniques, new equipment and discovering new environments. In fact, motivation is present just like the desire to exert oneself and to return to the game. Add to this a certain replayability thanks to the existence of several paths within the same level as well as a soundtrack. cheerful and energetic and we have a successful bet for Nintendo! The only regret one can have is the lack of a true multiplayer mode. While it is possible to save multiple user profiles on the same cartridge, you will not be able to exercise with a friend in the same room in split screen. A striking lack that would be easy to fill.

[wpsm_column size=”one-half”][wpsm_pros title=”PROS:”]

  • A perfect balance between sport and video games
  • Full and fun Adventure mode
  • The variety of exercises
  • The requirement in their achievements that allows them to be effective

As motivating as successful!

In the direct sequel to Wii Fit, Nintendo once again manages to effectively mix sport and video games. But far from the coldness and seriousness of its predecessor, Ring Fit Adventure brings real added value thanks to the addition of all these RPG components in its Adventure mode. We feel a tenfold pleasure in doing a series of repetitions and exercises and we certainly come out exhausted from each session, but also with a frank smile at having exerted ourselves while having strengthened our character. In short, if you feel like supplementing your physical activity or getting back to sport in a less conventional way, don’t hesitate!
