We knew about connected watches and bracelets with a sleep tracking function, Withings innovates with a ScanWatch capable of detecting sleep apnea, a condition that affects millions of people.

ScanWatch

Resolutely focused on smart health connected health, Withings presented its new smart health connected watch at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. Called “ScanWatch”, it is able to identify both atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea.

Withings continues to specialize in health. The French manufacturer presented at CES 2020 its latest smart health connected watch, the ScanWatch. With its allure of Steel HR, the ScanWatch would be able to establish a more complete cardiac assessment than those of its competitors. While the Apple Watch Series 5 only tracks atrial fibrillation, the ScanWatch would also detect sleep apnea, “a widespread syndrome, but often little detected”, according to Withings. The ScanWatch will be marketed in the second quarter in 2024 in France, from € 249 for the version with 38 mm diameter case, and € 299 for the 42 mm version.

A HEALTH-ORIENTED WATCH

Reading the characteristics will have let you guess, the ScanWatch is equipped with a cardiac sensor. The user can therefore at any time measure his heart rate whether to monitor his efforts during a sports session or as part of a health check. The ScanWatch can thus detect atrial fibrillation or, thanks to its 3 integrated sensors, perform an electrocardiogram which you can share with your doctor if you wish.

Attention, Withings reminds that a heart rate sensor is not intended to replace medical monitoring, the data are only provided for information. A pulsed oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensor, by activating during your sleep, can detect possible sleep apnea. This condition, which can cause very serious risks (hypertension, attention deficit disorder, diabetes, etc.), manifests itself by interruptions or reductions in breathing while you sleep. These anomalies are detected and recorded in the application.

Withings always more in health

To perform its electrocardiograms (ECG), the ScanWatch offers the same principle as the Move ECG, marketed a few months ago by the manufacturer. There are therefore three electrodes. A first on the back of the metal case, the second housed on the watch button while the third is located on the stainless steel crown. By touching the three simultaneously for 30 seconds, the watch therefore performs an ECG, making it possible to detect atrial fibrillation. It is the heart rate monitoring, located on the back of the case, against the skin, which will take care of measuring sleep apnea, most likely using an algorithm developed by Withings. The company indicates that its watch is being evaluated for the CE marking of medical devices. “This new innovation demonstrates Withings’ clear ambition to transform health through technology”, says Mathieu Letombe, CEO of Withings.

For the rest, this ScanWatch is very similar to the brand’s other smart health connected watches. The Pmoled screen of the watch is capable of displaying notifications as well as the heart rate. The Withings watch can track sports activity on around thirty different activities, and track sleep. In addition, Withings provides 30 days of battery life for both versions of the ScanWatch.

A VERY ELEGANT DESIGN

Those familiar with Withings connected watches will not be disturbed by the design of the Scan Watch, typical of the brand. We therefore find the sober style which makes the Withings connected watches look like “classic” watches. Its analog type dial incorporates two screens. The first, circular and Pmoled type, is positioned in the upper part and provides the usual information of a connected watch (number of steps, calories burned, heart rate, distance traveled, sms, email, call notifications, etc.) . The second, smaller and located in the lower part of the dial, informs you of the level of achievement of your daily step goal. The Withings ScanWatch is available in 38 and 42 mm format and in a choice of black and white colors.

REALLY VERY COMPLETE

The first watch to measure both sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation, the Withings Scan Watch offers other features. In particular, it offers the monitoring of around thirty sports. It also includes a GPS and an altimeter. It adds to its advantages a water resistance to 50 m and a comfortable autonomy of 30 days. On the price side, the 38 mm model is positioned at 250 € while the 42 mm model is displayed at 300 euros. Availability is scheduled for the second half in 2024.
